Shelf - Prototype

Quick model of a steel shelf using photo from "flickr" as reference.

This was my first shelf modelled. I tried using "boolean" tool for the first time to create all the holes in the supports but once done there were many artifacts visible and vertices I couldn't "target weld" if I tried.

As you can see, lots of edges have appeared randomly on the surface from making these holes which result in looking very UGLY.

Next I tried "Proboolean" tool, which is supposed to be a better, more refined improvement for "boolean" discovered from looking on internet for tutorials, so why not?

Looks tidier, so if I put "smoothing groups" for all faces, which i did, it should be all flush and smooth right?

Not so in this instance. Maybe I should leave "smoothing groups" out?

But then, I thought to recreate the "supports" as alpha planes to conserve polys and to look even. So here it is.

Textures taken from "CGtextures.com" and slapped onto shelf. So you can see it looks better and conserves polys. And holes are alpha-ed to allow you to see through them.

So, is this the way forward for this asset? To be honest it won't be as visible in the room because the shelf(ves) will be along a corner.
