Is the lighting in here too sporadic? Does it need to be more concentrated in some parts and not brighten the room up too much?
Anyways, what I've included is:
- roots coming out of ceiling through a crack
- roots coming from square gap in the ceiling and hanging over the statue
- soil and bits of debris fallen onto sheet of statue, floor and near crates
- attempted to create shadows of roots onto right side wall from light source (needs working as I don't know how these shadows would appear in shape and size if light is from above, will make roots in 3dmax as part of this scene to use as reference)
I saved two images of this scene, one normal, the other "unsharpened" which I learned from Joel's "little" tutorial below so cheers for that! Really helped bring out the piece more as you should be able to see by comparing the two. I pushed it up to max settings though as it made more of an impact.
- tarpaulin sheet is stained generally
- walls have some dampness/stains, general weathering
- ceiling edges have been cracked
- tried to keep colours pretty neutral for this room, no harsh contrasts

Awesome work dude, I think for this room the aim is to have a single shaft of light coming down through a crack in the ceiling, with the light hitting the floor directly infront of the draped statue.
Also the reason you don't normally go too high with unsharp mask is that the higher you go, the more artifacts you'll start to get.
Cheers. K, i'll redo this concept and use the suggested aim. Just one single shaft of light? I'll put a few quick concepts with different amounts and various intensities of light.
Oh and cheers for the tip. I'm starting to see artifacts in places, although it really helped bring out the highlights more, especially around the cracked ceiling edges.
