The distribution was OK but the models themselves looked wrong. There was no weight to them and they had no defining form.

This was attempt number 2 and I think that this one has good all round weight to it. Along with some loose flooring as it breaks through.

Here is the last attempt which I wanted to see how poly costly it would be to insert decayed bits of root into the mesh.

In the silhouette I was trying to give the impression of an uneven surface for bulges and and knotts in the root that could be defined using a normal map.
